LOCAL 1299 MONTHLY UPDATE

• U.S. Steel has begun the process of re-activating plants in the corporate system.  This improving news, as of July 1, 2009, has not yet spurred U.S. Steel to begin production again at the Great Lakes Works Facility in Ecorse and River Rouge, Michigan.

U.S. Steel has started recalling workers to the Granite City, Illinois and Hamilton, Canada Facilities.  In Granite City the recall process was with very short advance notice to Representatives and Members of the United Steelworkers.  USW members recalled in Illinois were returned to work following complete Physical Examinations which included Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Management at GLW continues to indicate to Local 1299 orders for Steel improving and continuous analyzing of both order trends and cost projections by U.S. Steel Corporate Headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Local 1299 will continue to communicate any breaking developments as they are officially announced via Bulletins and Informational Meetings.  The next USW Local 1299 and 9264 Information Update Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday July 8, 2009 at 9 AM & 1:30 PM and on Thursday July 9, 2009 at 9 AM and 4 PM.  Please note the starting times of each date.

• USW/US Steel Sept. 1, 2008 Basic Labor Agreement Contract Books are now printed and are available at Local 1299.  Members employed by U.S. Steel at Great Lakes Works can receive a copy on request at Local 1299.  Local 1299’s F.D.R. Memorial Hall is located at 11424 W. Jefferson Avenue, River Rouge, Michigan 48218.  The Local may be contacted at (313) 842-7270.

• Members of USW Local 1299 are invited to a “Summer Party” on Sat. July 25, 2009 from 9AM – 9PM at Lake Erie Metro Park, Wood Duck shelter.  The Picnic/Pot Luck is designed to bring co-workers from U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes works together and support “The Great Lakes Burn Camp” Charity.  Beer, hot dogs, water, and soft drinks will be available and all attending are asked to consider bringing a dish to pass around.  Entry to the Park is $4.00 if you don not have a yearly pass.  Contact Ray Bonds 007, Cold Mill Mechanical at (734) 925-2092 or rbonds007@hotmail.com, with any questions.

• Any member of Local 1299 employed at Prax Air, Tube City, or Great Lakes Recovery interested in filling the vacant Unit Griever positions of each Unit are asked to submit in writing a communication to Local 1299 Recording Secretary, Harold Jones by July 21, 2009 at 4 PM.

• United Way’s Information and Referral search for help with food, housing employment, health care, counseling and more can be reached by dialing 2-1-1 or visiting www.211us.org.

• The USW Local 1299 General Membership Meeting for the month of July will be held Wed. July 22, 2009 beginning at 4:30 PM.
