Presidents' Desk

United States Steel Corporation’s announced decision on December 2, 2008 to Idle the entire Great Lakes Works facility by January 11, 2009 due to Economic conditions brings with it new challenges for the members, families, and representatives of USW Local 1299. There is never a good time to deal with unemployment let alone in this current job market and the Holiday Season.
That being said there is little doubt that the USW Local 1299 Membership will survive and adjust in typical Steelworker rooted fashion. Furthermore, the history of Service to the Membership by Representatives of USW Local 1299 is a guarantee. The maintaining of the Standard of Living (of our members families) through this Idle process is the top priority of Representatives of Local 1299.
Local 1299 will hold Informational Meetings as warranted in addition to the Monthly General Membership Meetings. Members need not wait to attend a Scheduled Meeting to approach Local 1299 with any question or concerns related to Unemployment Compensation, Supplemental Unemployment Benefits (SUB), Program of Insurance Benefits (PIB), Recall Rights, or any other issue related to this layoff. USW Local 1299 Representatives can be contacted by calling 313-842-7270.
